Everything You Wanted To Know About Multi-Vitamins But Were Afraid to
Ask...
Like many people, I take a
multi-vitamin...
And up til a couple
years ago I never gave it thought as far as comparing one multi-vitamin to
another. I was pretty ignorant on the subject quite frankly and thought to
some extent they were all the same. We would typically buy one that was at
a low price figuring it had the same "stuff" as more expensive
multi-vitamins. But like most things in life there is a "story" just below
the surface that if one digs deep enough can uncover a great deal of
information and discover what was always believed to be true really
wasn’t.
I’ve been asked to
carry a multi-vitamin for almost two years. And up until recently I hadn’t
found one that I thought had all the essential ingredients that someone
would want in a multivitamin– plus be able to offer it at a good price. I
mean what’s the sense of having a multi-vitamin that was so expensive that
no one could afford it?
My search started with
a terrific book called, "The Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements"
by Lyle MacWilliam, Essentially this is a book that compares virtually all
multi-vitamins on the market today. Let me tell you that you could not
believe how many products out there are classifed as "multi-vitamins". I’m
talking hundreds!
In "The Comparative
Guide to Nutritional Supplements" they use several different criteria for
judging multi-vitamins. Some of the key measures are:
1. How many different
ingredients are included
2. How much of each
ingredient is included
3. Does the
multi-vitamin target the different parts of the body like the heart and
bones
Even if you weren’t a
multi-vitamin "expert" you could probably have guessed that the above
three items would be pretty critical in determining how good any
multi-vitamin was... but there are some unusual criteria on the list to
like:
"Does the multi-vitamin
contain Vitamin E that is either natural or synthetic– in other words
‘man-made’ Vitamin E?" Heck before I began researching multi-vitamins many
months ago I never even knew that Vitamin E could be "man-made".
The ratings for the
multi-vitamins ranged from 0 to 100 with 100 being the best mark. The
interesting thing was that many of the multis with name recognition such
as "Puritan’s Pride", "One A Day", "Centrum", "Vitamin World", "Rite Aid"
and "GNC" had products that scored less than 10!
After studying all criteria found in
this guide I then went about trying to find a multi-vitamin that compared
well to others on the higher end of the chart AND was priced
affordably too! In other words it needed to be a good value where each capsule
had a lot of good "stuff" in it BUT the cost of the bottle was affordable.
I think I hit my goal! And in the next column I present to you
our new multi-vitamin at an introductory price of only
